Maruti Brezza Sales – Brezza Vs Nexon

Until August 2025, the Maruti Brezza was leading the sales chart in the compact SUV segment. On the other hand, the Nexon used to be a position ahead or behind the Brezza. However, the tables have turned in September. In the previous month, Tata Motors sold more than 22,000 Nexons, becoming the highest-selling car of the month. At the same time, Maruti sold only 10,173 units of the Brezza – which gets out of the list of top 10 best-selling cars in September 2025! So why is there a gap of more than 12,000 units between the two? Which was previously hardly 1,000? Now, these are wholesale numbers (basically sold to the dealerships and not customers), however the numbers are concerning.

Is It GST 2.0 Effect?

So, how did Nexon get such an impressive lead in sales? Well, the GST 2.0 is one of the reasons. For starters, the GST 2.0 helped automakers reduce prices from 29% tax to just 18%. However, this is for cars measuring under 4 metres with an engine capacity of 1.2-litre for petrol. On the other hand, cars measuring under 4 meters and having 1.5-litre diesel or smaller-capacity diesel engines received a tax reduction from 31% to 18%. At the same time, cars with 1.5-litre petrol engines (for sub-4 metre or more) and cars with any engine measuring more than 4 metres were capped at 40% – which was previously between 45% to 48%.

Talking about the sub-4 metre SUV segment, the Nexon enjoyed the complete benefits of tax reduction as it comes with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine & 1.5-litre diesel engine. This helped the brand to reduce prices of the Nexon by up to Rs 1.55 lakh. Additionally, Tata Motors also announced a discount offer of up to Rs 45,000, making the total benefits up to Rs 2 lakh. On the other hand, the Brezza comes with a sole 1.5-litre NA petrol engine. Due to this, the price reduction was just 5% or up to Rs 1.20 lakh. That is a massive price difference, making buyers gravitate towards the Nexon. That said, Maruti will not want the Nexon or any of its competitors to enjoy the GST 2.0 benefits in the long run. And for that, the brand is left with only one option.

So, as you can see, Maruti could not enjoy the tax benefit mainly because of the engine on offer. Currently, the Brezza comes equipped with a K-series 1.5-litre NA petrol engine. On the other hand, the brand has K-series 1.2-litre NA petrol engine, K-series 1.0-litre NA petrol engine & Z-series 1.2-litre NA petrol engine. At the same time, it also has – 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine.

We do expect Maruti Brezza to later come equipped with the 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine or even with new Z-series, 1.2-litre strong hybrid engine. That said, with the smaller-capacity engine coming into play, the Brezza will be priced significantly cheaper – under the 18% tax bracket.

When To Expect?

Until now, reports have claimed that Maruti will likely bring the new engines with the new-gen Fronx SUV. Talking of which, reports claimed that the Maruti Fronx with a new hybrid engine is scheduled for a launch before the end of this year. However, there are no signs from the brand yet, and it could happen in the first half of 2026. Considering the current market scenario, Maruti may revise its plan to introduce new engines with the Brezza, and later with the Fronx. However, we don’t have clarity at the moment, and this can be in the latter half of 2026 or maybe even 2027.
